I thought it might be helpful to create a topic where people can post links to the best "Occupy" or other social justice oriented videos on the web. I hope this becomes a useful reference as it grows.

Link repository for *good* activist videos Empty First video- The Lightbulb Conspiracy. Topic: planned obsolescence

Post by Cryosun Mon Jan 16, 2012 11:25 pm

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1xt4nEvipg&feature=share

This is a great video demonstrating just how bad planned obsolescence is for our society and our planet. It shows ways people are beginning to fight back. The truly absurd thing about planned obsolescence is that real-world physical resources are being needlessly destroyed just to cope with a simple error in accounting!

Generally speaking, only sales of items are accounted for in our economy, and not the benefits the consumer receives from them. If consumer items were to be used on a benefit subscription accounting scheme, then it would be possible to reward a manufacturer for providing benefit versus rewarding them for making repeat sales. Any thoughts and input from the group on approaches to setting up such a scheme would be appreciated. My thinking so far on this topic is posted in the thread "Alternative currencies to replace Bankers and their usury money".

Link repository for *good* activist videos Empty Money as Debt series

Post by Cryosun Sun Jan 22, 2012 12:57 pm

Everyone ought to have seen this by now. Apparently everyone has not, so here it is: Money as Debt by Paul Grignon. This short (47 min) film is fundamental to understanding where we now are and how we got here. This is his new edition, and it has a good section that introduces alternatives that the old one did not have.

Having laid the groundwork for understanding, he fleshes out some important ideas in his sequel: Money as Debt II: Promises unleashed

And here's his latest film, it's awesome, too: "Money as Debt III: Evolution Beyond Money". I can only find it as segments on YouTube, here's the first one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2LjbBfh7Ug&feature=related

Link repository for *good* activist videos Empty Zeitgeist

Post by Cryosun Sun Jan 22, 2012 1:14 pm

And of course "Zeitgeist". Warning: the first movie in the series pisses off a lot of religious wingnuts. We want people to support and use alternatives to this dysfunctional system, this Zeitgeist (German word for "world view of a given era"- "time-spirit") most of us have not yet challenged. It's not terribly useful to try to connect with people by bashing their beloved superstitions. The first film was meant as Peter Joseph's personal rant- a way of venting everything that bothered him about his day job (advertising) and the world around him. I love the films. I don't agree with the centralization demanded by the Venus Project. I believe the same positive ends can be achieved locally everywhere (and thus globally) with local development of currencies that account for the good in the world (and not with a weighted emphasis on accounting for predation, as is the case with central bank money). Peter Joseph throws out money entirely, assuming central bank money is "MONEY" and that there's no point looking at any other kind. Even though I disagree with his perspective, I love his films and his contribution to awareness just the same.

Short film on YouTube. Clear and concise content. Excellent visualizations of otherwise difficult to explain concepts. Understanding happens instantly without making your head hurt. I completely recommend this video to everyone!

I just found this video. It's an easy-to-watch explanation of the consumption chain. http://www.storyofstuff.org/movies-all/story-of-stuff/

This one can be a bit overwhelming. It serves to illustrate the problem with an accounting system that rewards producers for creating scarcity rather than for producing. Here we have regulatory capture up to the level of judges themselves- and that's the logical ultimate end of such a system. http://www.thefutureoffood.com/onlinevideo.html

Link repository for *good* activist videos Empty European answer to technological unemployment

Post by Cryosun Sat Feb 18, 2012 1:52 pm

Ok, it's not a fantastic "activist" video. But I do find it to be a decent think-piece. I posted it to show that other people are thinking about this. They are at least recognizing the problem and asking the necessary questions about what the purpose of working is in the first place.

Top video on page is the trailer, bottom full length. Both with English subs.

Link repository for *good* activist videos Empty Empathic Civilization

Post by Cryosun Thu Mar 01, 2012 10:02 pm

This is from the first Occupy First newsletter. This is exactly the premise upon which I started talking about currency in my first post. People want to contribute. Short of a disorder or a lifetime of abusive "training", people want to help each other. If only they could afford to. If only contributing translated into spendable credit they could of course afford to. I believe the correct accounting will unleash heaven on earth. It is only the incorrect accounting that keeps it tethered, seemingly out of reach.

It is definitely good to hear more voices talking about gift economies and credit clearing as the basis of society rather than barter and gold. I'm buying this guy's book today!

Great video! Thank you. I've been interested in the Jubilee concept for a while. Need to re-watch, I think. Or maybe buy the book.
